The Urlacher Test: The national media has, this offseason, seemed more in search of an attention-getting story than the Cowboys ever were in search of a veteran middle linebacker to replace out-for-the-season starter Sean Lee.
That's the only explanation for why, amid volumes of denials from Dallas officials to me during the spring that they were at all serious about luring 36-year-old linebacker Brian Urlacher out of retirement, the bogus story continued to surface.
"We are not interested in anything like that at this time," a Cowboys source told me. ... repeatedly.
It's true that in Dallas, former Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli holds that same position - and a great deal of authority. But sources told me in the spring that present roster members Justin Durant, DeVonte Holloman and rookie fourth-rounder Anthony Hitchens - selected specifically to back up the oft-injured Lee - were going to be given every chance to meet expectations. Dice-roll Rolando McClain has been added to the roster ... but that didn't really lead SportsCenter.
And yet Google all the "names'' that ESPN and the NFL Network attached to the Cowboys, in most cases without bothering with pesky "sources.'' Andre Johnson. Jason Babin. Chris Johnson. Jonathan Vilma. Darrelle Revis. Aqib Talib. Jarius Byrd.
The media did the same at the trade deadline. Start with Maurice Jones-Drew. End with Adrian Peterson. Insert every "name'' in between.
Whether you fall for this is up to you. Let's call it "The Urlacher Test.'' And let's hope you pass it.
Predicting the roster: Our KD Drummond did this exercise a month ago. See how well our camp roster projections hold up here.

Onside kicks: Grantland can't seem to make up its mind whether Dallas building a powerful offensive line is a good thing or not. ... KD Drummond on how the Cowboys defense has changed over the years - and where it needs to change back. ... Dallas thinks Lance is ready to be a weapon ... Jason Witten leading the Cowboys' Irving-based conditioning tests today rather than allowing his mates to perform the series of sprints in the Oxnard cool? That's a good sign Witten will breeze through the workout despite the Texas heat. But it's also a clever way to "pre-test.'' Guys who fail -- and there will be those guys -- will get to California and have time to try it again before Thursday's first practice.
The Final Word: Our friend OCC notes that 81 of 90 players currently on the Cowboys roster were brought in with Jason Garrett as the head coach. So, OCC says, no more excuses.
