Owens, Witten, Thomas Get a Break
Terrell Owens

Posted Aug 3, 2008

Terrell Owens took it easy at Dallas Cowboys training camp Sunday, getting a day off from practice along with tight end Jason Witten and linebacker Zach Thomas.

All three players were on the field, but were in shorts and only spectators for the lone workout of the day. It was the Cowboys' 10th consecutive day of practices since opening camp, and came after back-to-back two-a-days when the team went later than scheduled both days.

Since the Cowboys aren't scheduled to be off until next Sunday, the day after their preseason opener, coach Wade Phillips is planning to periodically giving some veteran players time off. He also did that in his first Cowboys camp last year.

"I know we're getting a little tired," Phillips said after practice Sunday. "We still may hold a few guys out in different practices as we go along. We're getting worn down a little bit. They've done everything we've asked them to do, but we don't want to overdo it."

Pro Bowl left tackle Flozell Adams and guard Marc Colombo got a break from the team's morning workout Saturday, but were back on the field for that afternoon session.

Phillips gave the entire team a bit of a break Saturday night, with no meetings and a later curfew.

During the second practice Saturday, Owens was held out of some late drills, partly to give some other receivers snaps while also getting the 34-year-old Pro Bowler some rest.

Owens came out for the Sunday workout wearing white shorts and a long-sleeve shirt. Witten and Thomas were wearing their jerseys when they walked out onto the field after practice began.

Witten, a four-time Pro Bowler going into his sixth season, said it was the first time he's gotten a day off at camp with the Cowboys. Witten acknowledged that it felt strange being on the field without practicing, and that quarterback Tony Romo, one of his closest friends, gave him a hard time about it.

Thomas, going into his 13th NFL season, played only five games last year for the Miami Dolphins. The linebacker missed two games in September because of a concussion, then didn't play again after his vehicle was rear-ended in October and he suffered nagging migraines.

But Thomas said there is nothing wrong with him - "I feel really good," he said - but he certainly didn't mind the break.

"I'm not going to complain," Thomas said.
