'Boys Sign Two Linemen
Looking for additional help on the offensive line before the start of the training camp and the 2008 season, the Dallas Cowboys signed tackle Cory Lekkerkerker and guard Adam Stenavich on Wednesday. Lekkerkerker played for Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips in San Diego. He also started two games at left tackle last season for the Miami Dolphins. Stenavich was out of football last season and was last with the Green Bay Packers on their practice squad two years ago. He also spent spring 2007 in NFL Europe. The Cowboys' offensive line was one of main reasons the team won a team-record 13 regular season games a year ago, and should be a strength again in 2008. However, Dallas did not draft offensive lineman with any of its six picks in the 2008 draft and only signed two undrafted free agents (Harvard's Andrew Brcher and Sam Houston State's Brandon Hale) before the team's rookie mini-camp two weeks ago. While Stenavich is likely nothing more than another body for training camp, Lekkerkerker may have staying power. His older brother also played briefly in the NFL, spending time with the Oakland Raiders' practice squad. Lekkerkerker played his college ball at Cal-Davis before originally signing with the Chargers after the 2005 draft. Regardless, both players are viewed as potential backups in 2008 at best, should they remain with the team.
