Phillips has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, sources tell TheRanchReport.com.
Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett was named the interim head coach in a press conference after the news first leaked shortly after 1 p.m. central time.
Phillips ends his time with the Cowboys at 35-23. He won two NFC East titles, including one last year, and also notched the first playoff win for the organization since 1996.
However a 1-7 start, including Sunday night's embarrassing 45-7 loss at Green Bay proved to be too much to overcome.
"An in-season coaching change is not something I've done before, something I was reluctant to do as recently as last week," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "But I think what's best for the organization and the fans is a coaching change."
TheRanchReport.com has spoke with several players regarding this move and will have more posted on this breaking story later today.
